Essential oil is very popular as a home fragrance however it also helps in skincare. Essential oils are very beneficial and often seen on your skincare products. If you read the ingredient, including the scientific name, you will realize how often essential oil has been used in skincare products. Essential oils like tea tree and Lavender often seen as face wash, face toner and others. While some essential oils like Lemon and grapefruit are often seen in dark spot treatment and night cream. Here we are discussing and giving guides to finding best suited essential oils that can enhance your skincare routine and treat your complexion from home.

Essential oils for dry skin

Dry skin occurs on certain people especially with sensitive skin. Usually dry skin can be affected by unnatural commercial skincare products that contain too much foaming agent that cause dry skin. Some people have dry skin naturally due to lack of oil. You might want to use moisturizer often and with added these essential oils to your favourite moisturizer, it might help more for treating dry skin.

Lavender

Lavender has anti-inflammatory effects and gives your skin moisture. Aside from that, Lavender balances the pH in your skin. This is why Lavender often seen in Toners and certain face wash. It also can repair dry skin and avoid greasy skin to treat you ently without damaging your skin.

There are other essential oils that combat skin dryness such as Rose geranium and Frankincense. But there is also essential oil that you want to avoid when having dry skin such as Lemongrass, Tea tree  have drying properties and are suitable for acne but not for dry skin. 

Best use with really high quality carrier oil like Jojoba Oil and Argan Oil because these carrier oils will leave your skin smooth and silky.

Essential oils for oily skin

Oily skin is very common and very prone to acne. This is cause by excess oil on your skin. You might want to control oil on your face to avoid break out, acne, whiteheads, blackheads and clog pores. Factors like environment humidity and weather play a role and you want to be more cautious since Malaysia is a humid country yet very hot in the afternoon. Using these essential oils might help your skin be less oily and combat bacteria.

Rosemary

Rosemary oil is noted as very popular and common in skincare products. It is anti-inflammatory, analgesic and helps control oil sebum on your face. It is also a very good oil in combating bacteria and provides balancing to your skin.

Frankincense

Popular as anti-aging essential oil Frankincense can also control oil sebum, help reducing acne and avoid break out.

Rose Geranium

Rose geranium is a great cleansing product, cleaning clog pores and exfoliate dead skin also giving help in killing bacteria that cause acne.

Essential oils for sensitive skin

Sensitive skin is complicated as it could be dry or even oily that can come with allergies , eczema and other complications on your skin. You might want to buy natural products to avoid irritants and rely on natural remedies.

Just like other skin problems and essential oils, as a sensitive skin, you might want to avoid essential oil that might affect you. In this case, stay away from citrus essential oils such as Lemon and Lemongrass that are highly acidic and very photo toxic under the sun.

Acne, very common yet a frustrating problem for all people. It is hard to remove excess oil without drying your skin out. It is more problematic if you have painful pimples and inflammatory acne. So using essential oil may help you reduce acne.

This is where you want to use citrus essential oil that helps reduce acne and kill bacteria. There are many essential oils that can help reduce acne and unclog pores. These essential oil also help greatly as brightening and detoxifying. 

Lemon

Lemon essential oil are very common in cleansing and brightening. It has antibacterial properties and is rich in vitamin C helpful in killing acne-causing bacteria. 

Lemongrass

Lemongrass is rich in  astringent properties. Just like Lemon, it can kill bacteria and also help fight acne-causing bacteria. It is also antimicrobial, helpful as detoxifying and cleansing. You might want a deep cleansing.

Tea tree

Lavender

It has anti-inflammatory properties that help sensitive skin and eczema, it also moisturize dry skin thus helps eczema that is caused by dry skin and flaky skin.

Tea tree

Having anti-bacteria and microbes can help reduce itchy skin however it can also cause irritation to people with allergies. 

Sometimes eczema happens very painfully, and itching can cause injury, bleeding and scarring. Use essential oils that have analgesic properties that are pain-relieved. These essential oils also can be used if you get a painful bite from insects.

Peppermint

Peppermint is very common and for Malaysians some of us even eat it as a vegetable and drink it’s tea for health reasons. Peppermint is very popular as toothpaste, but it has really good analgesic properties. Peppermint is also often used on cold and chest rub to relieve pain. It helps cool down hot rashes too.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is often use for vapor rubs, reduce fever and silent cough. It is helpful in reducing rashes and gives good moisture to skin to reduce flaky, itchy skin.

Patchouli

Patchouli oil is an uncommon essential oil. However, it is a popular tree in Malaysia. You might not notice because of the different names. In Malaysia it is called “pokok Nilam”. Often used as Fragrance and some uses for culture and belief practices. Patchouli have a calming effect and help relieve pain and discomfort. If you like the smell of perfume, you can try them on!

Dark spots are stressful and can appear as you age and appear due to sun exposure. These essential oils help in brightening skin, toning out skin and reducing dark spots as well as reducing scars.

Ylang ylang

Ylang Ylang is a really good essential oil for many benefits and it smells nice. These flowers are very popular in Malaysia. It is known as Cananga or Kenanga. Popular old practices among Malaysian ladies as fragrances and bath flower, Ylang Ylang balance in relaxing and also help reduce skin pigmentation.

Lemon Lemon is very popular for fighting dark spots and brightens skin, often used in skincare as a brightening cream. Often used for night routines only due to the photo toxicity.

Frankincense

The most famous uses of Frankincense in skin care is to reduce dark spots and reduce scarring. Frankincense helps skin to tone up and reduce dark spots naturally.

How to use essential oils for Face Care

Essential oils are often used by inhaling or using a diffuser. Here I will explain to you how you can use essential oil for face care and not only for fragrance. However do remember to do a patch test to avoid allergies. Drop essential oil into carrier oil to dilute it and apply a small amount to skin . Wait for 24 hour if nothing  happens after 24 hours, you are good to go!

Diffuser

You still can get skin benefit from using a diffuser. Although not as much as applying to your skin. It can work to humidify your skin and hand when the vapour is dispersed.

Drop them into Skincare Products

The easiest way is to drop 1-2 essential oils on your skin care to get the benefit of the essential oil. It is safer too since it’s very easy to do.

Do Your Own Face scrub with essential oil

Essential oil works better when you use them as face scrub. You can easily prepare a home remedy face scrub and drop essential oil to get them done!

  1. 1/2 cup Carrier oil.( You can replace it with any carrier oil,we have Jojoba, Castor oil, argan oil and Rosehip oil)
  2. 1/4 cup granulated sugar (you can use up to 1/2 cup if you want your scrub to have a more coarse, sand-like texture. You can use sugar from your kitchen too)
  3. 25 drops of lavender essential oil 

You can pretty much replace any essential oil you want and even can mix two to three types of essential oil too.

Do Your Own Face Oil

Best way to treat face care with essential oil is to apply topically diluted essential oil with any carrier oil. Apply to your face as face serum at night, you can leave it overnight and wash it in the morning.

20 drops of essential oil with one tablespoon of carrier oil. Use this ratio to measure essential oil and you can mix few essential oils too, not only one type but make sure the same ratio.

Face Steam With Essential Oil

Essential oil can be therapeutic when used in a hot bath tub. For face care, you can use face steaming with essential oil too! This technique is able to remove impurities, dead cells, unclog pores and reduce acne. 

Simply prepare a small basin big enough for steaming face with hot water. Use hot water so the essential oil can be dispersed easily. Drop 3-4 essential oils into hot water and steam your face in it!  Using lemon, Tea tree, Lemongrass ,Lavender ,Grapefruit essential oil for face steaming is great!

Conclusion

While Essential oil can be natural and most of the time very beneficial, please take note that some essential oils might backfire due to health complications and medicine. It is very important to talk to your doctor first if you have skin problems and allergies. 

Be aware not to use essential oil on injuries and open wounds. Do not use essential oil directly on skin and also be careful not to touch the eye. For eyes, we recommend using diluted essential oil or simply carrier oil like Rosehip oil for under eye treatment.

Stay away from children. An essential oil can be very dangerous for kids and young babies. Please consult doctors if you are pregnant and breastfeeding to avoid complications.
